Weight is a Guide; Body Score is the Key

While the chart provides a numerical weight estimate, veterinarians rely more on the **Body Condition Score (BCS)** to determine if a dog is healthy. BCS is a visual and hands-on assessment, typically scored from 1 (emaciated) to 9 (severely obese).

  • **Ideal BCS (4 or 5):** Ribs are easily felt but not seen; the dog has a visible waist when viewed from above and a tucked abdomen when viewed from the side.
  • **Overweight (7 or higher):** Difficult to feel ribs; little or no visible waist; fat deposits over the lower back and tail.
  • **Underweight (3 or lower):** Ribs, spine, and hip bones are easily visible; severe waist tuck.

Regularly assessing your dog's BCS is the best way to ensure they maintain a lifelong healthy weight.
